       The New Baby

I based this story on a family I knew twenty years ago in a parish my husband worked in. The Rector's daughter fell pregnant. For the whole nine months her father refused to speak to her, even though they lived in the same house. Sadly, their story didn't have the happy ending I gave the family in my story.
By the time we left the parish, the Rector still wasn't speaking to his daughter, although he seemed quite fond of the grandchild. When I was asked to write a story for an adult literacy series, I thought hard about something that might resonate with adult learners. I only had around 250 words to tell the story, and the words needed to be simple.
I like this story very much, although I wish I had had a few more words to fill out the ending so that it could be a little less sentimental.

It has done very well, and has been reviewed as far afield as Canada. It's been translated into Zulu and Sotho
